An NYPD officer and a woman were shot in Queens during a string of armed robberies carried out by a suspect responsible for multiple heists within an hour, police confirmed.

The chaos began around 5:30 p.m. when officers responded to a 911 call about a robbery at a deli on Hillside Avenue near 164th Street in Jamaica. According to authorities, the suspect entered the store, threatened workers and customers with a black revolver, and fired a shot before fleeing.

As the search unfolded, a witness flagged down officers on Jamaica Avenue and 160th Street, pointing out a man who had just robbed a nearby smoke shop on Guy Brewer Boulevard and fired another shot during the crime, said NYPD Chief of Detectives Joe Kenny.

An hour later, two uniformed neighborhood coordination officers spotted a man matching the suspect’s description. When they approached and ordered him to stop, the suspect fled and pulled out a firearm.

Despite commands to drop the weapon, the suspect opened fire, striking Officer Rich Wong in the thigh. Wong returned fire, hitting the suspect in the face.

The gunman, identified as 57-year-old Gary Worthy, was transported to Jamaica Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after 7 p.m.

Officer Wong was also taken to the hospital, where he is recovering. The bystander, injured during the spree, is expected to survive.

Police are continuing to investigate the string of incidents.
